We begin the process by meeting with the client to outline project requirements, needs, wants and aspirations. Whilst also highlighting any potential complexities or challenges.

THE STONE JOURNEY

STAGE 2

Stone is then extracted, in the case of our Yorkstone is dug out with a 50-tonne excavator in blocks up to 20 tonnes. Other stones such as Bath stones are mined, sawn into blocks underground. Harder stones such as granite and gneiss are sawn from the face of open cast quarries.

THE STONE JOURNEY

STAGE 3

Blocks are then graded and sorted, with our Yorkstone we plug and feather to split blocks into manageable sizes, these are then transported to the processing plant for production. Some quarries, where large reserves are found, have the processing operation on site, where smaller reserves are being extracted this is not economically viable.

THE STONE JOURNEY

STAGE 4

Stone is then processed, starting with a primary saw, ours is a 3mtr diamond tipped circular, others use wire saws.Once slabbed, the stones then go to a secondary saw, we have numerous 1500mm saws and CNC machines to cut to the appropriate size.In the case of our Yorkstone it then goes through our calibration and finish machine. For other materials it may then go to masons for hand finishing, items such as cills coping pier cap etc.

THE STONE JOURNEY

STAGE 5

Once finished and inspected stones are packed on to wooden pallets, where necessary polystyrene packaging is used, this is kept to the optimal quantity not just for cost, but for environmental impact too. Then shrink wrapped and pallet tickets are attached.Materials are then sent by road in construction order to sites across the UK.RGB Landscapes are supplying projects in Edinburgh and Cornwall and most areas in between.
